What is a DNS leak?

When you connect to a VPN, your DNS queries should travel through the encrypted VPN tunnel and be resolved by your VPN provider's DNS servers. A DNS leak occurs when those queries instead travel outside the tunnel — often to your ISP's DNS resolver — revealing every domain you visit to your ISP even when your VPN is active.

This can happen due to operating system DNS caching, WebRTC settings, or VPN misconfigurations. CyberCat's built-in encrypted DNS prevents this by default — but it's worth verifying any time you switch networks or VPN providers.
